Aspen’s Newest Celebrity Neighbor
Lance Armstrong’s choice of retirement spots may not be that of most people’s. When people think of retiring, most think warm, tropical areas with golf-cart communities and early-bird specials. Lance on the other hand, decided to make Aspen, Colorado his newest home.
Of course, he then decided that retirement was not his thing, so where better than Aspen to make a come back!
Aspen’s newest celebrity neighbor, Lance Armstrong, made his public debut at a couple local bicycling events this past week. Competing in the local Aspen bicycling summer series season finale, he took first place completing the Smuggler Mountain/Hunter Creek loop in 58 minutes. Then his team of 3 (the two others were local riders) took first place in the inaugural 12 Hours of Snowmass, a twelve-hour mountain bike event that was a benefit for two local children’s charities.
As for Lance’s decision to make Aspen a home for him, he said, “I love it here. It’s a lot of things. The training is really good, the people are very cool and pretty relaxed. They leave you alone. Everybody is fit and cares about their lifestyle and they’re healthy and like to be outdoors and fish or hike or run or ride on the road, so I’ve found it to be a really cool community.”
Most local bicyclists are in awe of Lance Armstrong, and we will see if the starstruck emotion wears off. Until then, the local bikers will continue to wear the badge of honor of being “passed by Lance”.
