Highly Anticipated Opening of Basalt Whole Foods Market Delayed
According to a developer representative for the Whole Foods Market building in Basalt, construction will be delayed until springtime due to the national credit crisis. Construction halted over Labor Day weekend at the highly visible site in the Willits Town Center along Highway 82, after crews had excavated for an underground parking garage and poured the concrete foundation for the 44,000 square foot building.
Whole Foods is curbing its aggressive national expansion plans, although the developer, Joseph Freed and Associates, says Whole Foods remains committed to the Basalt project. Whole Foods’ overall sales have decreased this year as people have stopped spending money on expensive organic, natural foods. However, analysts have said that the company isn’t in trouble financially.
The developer representative had a positive outlook regarding the firm’s prospects for finishing the Whole Foods building, especially if funds become available within the next few months. The residents of Basalt, Aspen and the rest of the Roaring Fork Valley will have to wait and see.
