Aspen’s Sardy Field Business to Increase with Eagle Airport Closure
Aspen/Pitkin County airport will be the choice for more visitors and locals flying in and out of Colorado’s mountain resort areas now that commercial air traffic at Eagle County Airport is scheduled to shut down from April 15th through August 31st, 2009.
The Eagle County Airport is closing for 4.5 months while the runway undergoes major maintenance. An interim runway will be available for private aircraft. The closing will have a favorable impact on the Aspen/Pitkin County airport and it is reported that the airlines will likely expand service into Aspen when and if demand increases.
In an exclusive interview with the Aspen Board of Realtors, Pitkin County Airport Director Jim Elwood said the additional service provided by Frontier Airlines puts the airport in a better position to meet the increased demand. Increased competition has resulted in an increase in the number of vacationers and locals flying between Denver and Aspen, CO, in spite of the severe economic downturn that has gripped the nation.
