Lineup Announced for Jazz Aspen’s 2009 Season
Jazz Aspen has announced its lineup for the 2009 festival season. Performances include a wide range of genres including hip-hop, jazz, classic rock, jam bands and more. The season opens with the June Festival, with headline events in the Aspen Music Festival’s Benedict Music Tent June 18-20, and club shows June 24-27. So far, June artists include:
- 29-year-old British pop singer-pianist Jamie Cullum
- Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti
- Motown icon Smokey Robinson, marking the 50th anniversary of Motown
- 24-year-old jazz singer and bassist Esperanza Spalding at Belly Up
- A cappella septet Naturally 7 at Belly Up
- Pop vocalist Al Jarreau on June 27th
- Natalie Cole, pop vocal legend, on July 25th
The Labor Day Festival has been shortened from a 4-day event to 3-days, with artists performing as follows:
- Day 1: Soul-reggae band Michael Franti & Spearhead, in their only Colorado concert date this summer, plus Citizen Cope.
- Day 2: Hip-hop group Black Eyed Peas, in their only Colorado appearance this summer, Jam band Umphree’s McGee, 3rd act to be announced
- Closing Day: The Allman Brothers, currently in their 40th anniversary tour. The Allmans drew the biggest crowd in Jazz Aspen history with their 2007 Labor Day Festival appearance. Rock veterans the Doobie Brothers will also be performing along with Southern rock band the Drive By Truckers.
