Whole Foods Signs New Deal in Basalt
It’s official – Whole Foods Market has signed a new agreement to open a store at Willits Town Center in Basalt. No details have been released yet regarding the store size, the terms of the agreement and the projected opening date, although a source says more details are expected to be released this week. Officials for Whole Foods and Joseph Freed & Associates declined comment, but Basalt mayor Leroy Deroux said he was informed Friday that a lease had been signed. Whole Foods signed its initial lease in May 2007 to open a 44,000 square-foot grocery store at Willits. The project subsequently stalled in September 2008. Joseph Freed & Associates defaulted on the contract when it was unable to deliver the shell of the market to Whole Foods on June 1, 2009, but since then both sides have confirmed they remain in negotiations.
With 289 stores in North America and the United Kingdom, Whole Foods is the world’s largest retailer of natural and organic foods. The new store is expected to attract shoppers from throughout the Roaring Fork Valley and beyond.
